Band Stand

The Band Stand is gone — demolished some years ago — but it stood near the site of the current skate park, and for a long time it was the reason people came to this corner on a Sunday. Local people walked in Kings Park on a Sunday afternoon and evening in good weather and congregated around it. It began as a raised wooden platform, replaced in 1937 by a white semicircular stone structure with pillars at each side, a roof canopy and a raised platform. Seating was provided for the audience and a fence enclosed the concert area. According to local people, the concerts proved very popular over many years — though there was no shelter if it rained, and in cold or wet weather the concert was sometimes moved to a local cinema.

Changing rooms were built onto the back of the bandstand, used by the many football teams that played in the park.
