Band Stand

The Kings Park bandstand (demolished)
The Kings Park bandstand (demolished)

Local people used to enjoy walking in Kings Park on a Sunday afternoon and evening in good weather, and often congregated around the Band Stand, which used to be located near the site of the current skate park. Initially the Bandstand was a raised wooden platform. This was replaced in 1937 with a white semicircular stone structure, with pillars at each side, a roof canopy and raised platform. Seating was provided for the audience and a fence enclosed the concert area. According to local people, these bandstand concerts proved very popular over many years, but unfortunately there was no shelter if it rained. Sometimes in cold or inclement weather the concert venue was changed to a local cinema. Sadly, this Bandstand was demolished a few years ago.
