The Dam Wall

The loch that lay in this part of the park from the 15th to the 18th century did not form by itself. It was held in place by a dam, and the wall that held it still survives.

You can walk along the top of it. It is an early and little-known piece of civil engineering — built to create and maintain a royal water feature, and standing long after the water it held was drained away. A lade, or artificial watercourse, carried water off to the east.

Once you know it is there, the line of the wall is easy to pick out; most people walk it without realising what it is.
